Synopsis

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, as you can probably already tell from the title, follows the many stories and (mis)adventures of young American boy Tom Sawyer, who lives with his aunt on the edge of the Mississippi River. Inspired largely by Twain's own childhood ramblings, each chapter discloses an exciting new undertaking of this much-loved character.

This book is full of childish charm and innocence; Mark Twain successfully leads readers back to the carefree days of youth, invoking reminiscence with ingeniously worded sentences and humorous conversations.

Thoughts

I enjoyed this book much more than I had expected! Though the language may seem a little difficult and slow to unaccustomed, modern readers who are used to Percy Jackson-style writings, Tom Sawyer is in no way boring.

Mark Twain manages to very skillfully bring those foolish, childish emotions to light; for example, that selfish desire to be in some way wounded just so those who we feel have wronged us would immediately regret their perpetrations against us and fall on their knees, confessing their regret and begging for forgiveness.

I found this a lighter read; something to pick up at the end of the day and enjoy before bed.

Recommendation

I would suggest this book to those who find historical fiction interesting, or are looking to pursue an easier classic.

Age-range wise, I think 12 or 13 and above would be suitable. I can definitely see it being read as a bedtime story to younger children, though.

Overall, reading Tom Sawyer was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It starts off with early chapters full of cunning plans and street brawls that introduce Tom's witty character, before building up to more and more reckless adventures. This classic novel includes just the right mix of humour, adventure and suspense, complete with several plot twists that I certainly did not expect in a book like this!

Go and read it!
